Custom Gut Strung Harps
Each Harp I build is perfectly designed and crafted to fit the needs and desires of it`s owner and player, including my Custom Gut Strung Harps.
My Gut Strung Harps can be built with all the same string tension and spacing options as my nylon strung ones. I use a custom computer program to design all my string sets, and with Gut, this allows me to vary the tension from what is used on Pedal harps, to give you just the sound and string tension you desire. Each Harp I build is perfectly designed and crafted to fit the needs and desires of it`s owner and player, including my Custom Gut Strung Harps.
I can design and build for you a single string band Gut Strung Harp in any size from 19 to 45 strings. The possible note ranges can go from first octave 'G', down to low sixth octave 'E'. I can also build you a Double or Cross strung gut harp. Please see my Cross Strung and Double Strung Harp pages for more information on these possibilities. String tension on my gut strung harps can be from as high as full pedal harp tension, to as light as medieval or Gothic style stringing. Or any variation in between!
I use a custom computer harp string designing program, as an important part of my design process. With this program, I can design for you the perfect Gut string set for your Custom harp, with just the right tension and string spacing. With the proper string tension and spacing your custom Gut Strung Harp will be a perfect fit to your playing style.
For my Custom Harps designed to be strung with Gut strings I offer two general types of gut gauges and string tensions. Your Custom Gut string set may be a variation of one of these two types, depending on the exact type tension you desire. These two general categories can give you some reference, for comparison.
LEVER GUT
This is a lighter gauge of gut that has a little softer tension than Nylon. It is also called Folk Harp Gut. The tone is brighter than Concert Gut but not as bright as Nylon. They seem to be warmer in the lower end and brighter in the higher end. Many pedal harpists see these strings as a welcome change from concert gut and a nice rest for their fingers without compromising the wonderfully warm and rich tone that gut offers. Each string is actually thinner than the corresponding nylon string. For the lower octave bass strings I use the same type of strings as I do with a nylon set. Vanderbilt strings are my source for all my gut strings
CONCERT GUT
This is the same stringing used on pedal harps. It has the warmest tone and the firmest tension. If you are a pedal harp player and like the feel of your pedal harp, you might choose these strings. It takes strong fingers to get a lot of sound out of these strings, so beginners should shy away from them unless you know that you will play pedal harp someday. I use the same type of Bass wire combinations for the lower octaves on all of my larger harps, but with higher tension for a model with Concert harp tuning. Concert Gut strings are only to be used on my custom harps, designed and built to support their higher tension.
Design Process
Based on the number of strings and the note range you desire, I will design your harp with the style, shape and size of structure that you fills your needs, both practically and Artistically. The possible styles and sizes that I can build your Gut strung harp in, are almost un-limited, from very compact and light in weight, to quite large with a Kingly presence!
As will all my custom harp designs, I will draw your proposed harp out full sized, including views of the sound board, back sound holes and the side staves, for your approval, before I start to build. I can model your harp based on any style of harp that you admire, weather one that I have created, or any historical or contemporary model. If you have a favorite harp that you play at home, or one that you have played elsewhere, I can match the string spacing, angle and tension for your new custom harp.
Any desired carving, sculpting, or painted decoration can be also shown on this drawing. In the case of painted or carved decoration, I can give you different price quotes, for different sized areas of decoration.
